TECHNIQUES AND STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE GAMES
It is a great way to learn all sorts of things about English through Language Games. These type language games are for English language learners or native speakers who are addicted to word games. Their is a great deal of effort for learning a language. Language games help the students to make and sustain the effort of learning.
Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills can be improved by language games. Other names associated with language games are Secret language, Disguised speech, play language. Using the language games in lessons help the students to create positivity and motivate them to participate. Through the games the students are able to memorise what they learn through the language games. There are different types of language games and they include vocabulary, spelling, role play, conversation, writing, dramatics.
IMPORTANCE OF LANGUAGE GAMES.
Language games is not merely a time filling activity but they make the learning process easier. Students feel a positive attitude towards to learning environment as the games are considered to be so much refreshing. They are playing as well as learning. The level of stress and anxiety in students is lowered thereby improving the acquisition of language.
When they are learning in a relaxed environment, they remember the things easier and faster. Students can improve the spelling and vocabulary through the language games by discovering new words everyday. It is the duty of the teachers to help the students by introducing them to the fun games so that they will learn new words and spelling. Games are the best way to make them learn as well as play so that they can learn and practise new words.
IMPORTANCE OF SPELLING GAMES
Children become frustrated and gives up as they struggle with their spelling words. Learning of spelling is very important to a child's life. An understanding of the basic spelling is needed throughout the education and their life. Spelling is important as it facilitates reading. In order to move foreward in their life, they should the spelling. If the spelling is limited for a child, it will affect their reading. The children will easily get noticed if they have a poor spelling and it gives a bad impression.
Punctuation errors often got unnoticed but that is not the case with spelling. If the child does not have proper base for the spelling, it may affect his schooling and in further cases upto the university level. Bad spelling may affect the taking down of notes, preparing resume and presentation. If the child struggles with the spelling help the child with the spelling games right from the begining. Various spelling games that teachers can introduce to students are Bananagram, Boggle, Hangman. Spelling and reading skills are closely related to each other . Teach the students to spell so that they cement the connection between the letters and sounds.
IMPORTANCE OF VOCABULARY GAMES
Vocabulary development is equally important. When a native speaker enters the kinder garden, they may know at least 5000 words. But that is not the case with English language learner, they may know 5000 words in their native language but very few words in english. English language learner learns english vocabulary through their practise only . Native people will learn new words but English language learners will find it difficult to learn and building of basic foundation in vocabulary.
Reading a story before teaching will help the students to learn the vocabulary. Methods that can adopt are role playing, using gestures, showing real objects, pointing to pictures, quick drawing on board, tell them about and ask them to repeat words. Teachers can use computers and television, audio books, wizard box, oral language use. Some of the vocabulary games that enables the students to improve their vocabulary are Onion rings, slap the board, ladder race.
LET'S PLAY AND LEARN
Playing the language games have many benefits in the classroom. Students become more engaged in their learning and class positivity is also increased. Students become more motivated and they pay attention to the games. By engaging in the game they can play as well as learn. By playing language games students can improve their spelling and vocabulary. Encourage the children to participate in such games so that they get a positivity and learning experience.
